Corrections’ Superintendent Asif suspended

A senior officer of Maldives Correctional Service, Superintendent Mohamed Asif has been suspended.

The suspension has been confirmed to “Sun” by a reliable source; but MCS has not provided any clarification regarding the reason for his suspension.

Asif, who has 10-years of experience at MCS, was last in charge of running Hulhumale’

Detention Center, prior to which he was in charge of running Maafushi Prison.

Asif’s suspension comes after five jailed foreigners escaped from the Hulhumale’ Detention

Center on August 10.

The five detainees – of Bangladeshi nationality – were under custody at Hulhumale’ Detention Center ready to be deported. Four of the detainees are suspects in gang violence and one is a suspect in a narcotics case.
