Five expats escape from custody

Five expatriates in the custody of the Maldives Correctional Service has escaped last night.

The five expats that escaped are all citizens of Bangladesh. Four of them are detained in connection to a fight. The other is involved in a drug-related crime.

Expats involved in the fight:

- MD Abdul Majid

- MD Monir Khan

- MD Ali Hossain

- Ripon

Information Officer of the Correctional Service, Ahmed Lugam told Sun Media that they escaped around 2:30 a.m. last night. He said that the detention center in Hulhumalé has a fence made of tin and they escaped by tearing through the fence.

Lugman said that all five escapees were in the custody of the Correctional Service pending deportation. They were all detained in suspicion of the crimes and no sentence has been passed on them.
