Leader of the PPM Parliamentary Group and MP for the Vilimalé constituency, Ahmed Nihan Hussain Manik has said that a law is needed to lock down the people who commits acts of defamation and attack the security forces of the nation in different ways.
Speaking at a PPM event at STELCO today, MP Nihan condemned the different attacks on the police and MNDF that has took place throughout history.
And while political figures are involved in these attacks on the security forces and former presidents issuing statements voluntarily supporting such acts, Nihan questioned whether they forgot the safety and security of the country in the past.
With that remark, MP Nihan mentioned four people that were killed in four years in the reign of President Maumoon Abdul Gayoom and asked whether it was President Yameen ruling back then.
While MP Nihan has made such remarks, the office of the former Presdent, Maumoon Abdul Gayoom issued a statement today raising concerns over the government's negligence in ensuring the efficiency of the state institutes in fulfilling their responsiblities.
The statement called for the heads of the institutes to resign if they cannot bring order to the country.
Laws that can bring criminal charges against those who attack the police and MNDF are currently in effect as well. A number of people are currently being charged with obstruction of police duties as well.
