Injured officer to undergo major surgery

The police officer stabbed during the operation to stop a shipment of contraband to Maafushi Prison needs to undergo surgery to repair damage to his lungs, reports Maldives Police Service.

Police Constable Ali Razzan, 19, – stationed at Maafushi Police Station – was stabbed on his upper body as he was checking the people onboard the speedboat carrying contraband en route to Maafushi Prison in the early hours of August 5.

He is being treated at the Indhira Gandhi Memorial Hospital, which reported earlier that his condition was improving.

MPS reported this Sunday that doctors have discovered injuries to his lungs which had gone unnoticed during the earlier surgery.

The specifics of the damage are unclear at this point.

“The doctors have decided to carry out a major surgery on the lungs. Doctors at IGMH are preparing for the surgery,” reported MPS.

Police arrested the man who stabbed Razzan – Azhar Ibrahim, 31, from H. Ku’lhavahmaage in Male’ City, a 51-year-old man, a 32-year-old man and a minor in connection with the case.

The shipment of contraband contained mostly electronics.

The minor was released by Juvenile Court on Saturday night, while Criminal Court ordered that Azhar be jailed pending outcome of the trial. The other two suspects have been remanded to 10 days in police custody.
