Appeal hearings regarding Faris’ arrest concluded

High Court began and concluded the hearings for appeal of Dhiggaru MP Ahmed Faris Maumoon’s arrest, this Thursday.

Faris is contesting the warrant for his arrest on July 18, claiming the warrant was issued in violation of Criminal Procedure Act.

The appeal hearings were held in closed court.

Speaking to “Sun” regarding the appeal hearings, member of Faris’ legal team, Ibrahim Shameel said the lawyers argued the arrest warrant was issued in violation of Criminal Procedure Act.

Shameel said the arrest warrant claiming Faris posed a threat to society was issued long after the police announced they had evidence against him. He questioned how Faris could suddenly pose a threat to society when he had posed no such threat during that period.

Faris’ lawyers filed a motion this Thursday, asking he be released until High Court makes its decision. The judge said he would make his decision regarding the request later.

Faris was arrested for suspected bribery of fellow parliamentarians. Criminal Court has ordered that he be detained pending outcome of the trial.

He has also filed an appeal regarding the order; the appeal hearings are yet to begin.
