Preliminary hearing in Faris’ case postponed to July 20

Preliminary hearing in the identity theft case against Dhiggaru MP Ahmed Faris Maumoon has been postponed to July 20.

Preliminary hearing in the case was originally scheduled for July 17, but was abruptly re-scheduled to this Thursday.

Faris’ lawyer, Maumoon Hameed raised a procedural motion when the judge assigned to the case, Judge Adam Areef was replaced by Judge Ibrahim Ali during this Thursday’s hearing.

Maumoon Hameed argued that the change hindered a fair trial in the case.

Judge Ibrahim Ali responded that the judge assigned to the case was changed due to changes brought to the case. But that he wasn’t given a reason as to why he was assigned the case. He said he would look into the matter.

Judge Ibrahim Ali said the trial will be held fairly.

Maumoon Hameed said he had been preparing his case for the originally scheduled date – July 17 – and asked that the preliminary hearing be changed to that date.

Judge Ibrahim Ali scheduled the hearing for July 20, at 10 am.

Faris is charged with identity theft involving unpermitted use of the flag of Progressive Party of Maldives (PPM) – the country’s ruling party.
