After a numerous MPs left the ruling party PPM, the government coalition of PPM and MDA has lost majority at the parliament.
The MPs left the party soon after the Attorney General filed a jurisdictional case with Supreme Court today requesting that seats of parliamentarians won as candidates of a particular party be taken away if the parliamentarians switch parties.
The latest MPs to leave PPM is the MP for Ihavandhoo constituency, Mohamed Abdulla (Muhammaa), MP for Thimarafushi constituency, Mohamed Mustafa, MP for south Thinadhoo constituency, Abdulla Mohamed and the MP for Mahibadhoo constituency, Ahmed Thoriq (Tom).
The MP for south Mahchangolhi consitutency, Abdulla Sinaan and the MP for north Thiandhoo constituency, Saudilla Hilmee also left the party today.
Yesterday, the MP for Dhangethi constituency, Il'ham Ahmed and the MP for Dhiddhoo constituecy Abdulla Latheef Mohamed left PPM along with the MP for Hanimaadhoo constituency, Hussain Shahudee.
From the ten MPs of PPM that signed the no confidence motion against the Speaker of the Parliament, Abdulla Maseeh, the only MP remaining with PPM is the MP for the north Fuvahmulah constituency, Ali Shaah.
Currently PPM has 35 PMs in the parliament and a total 40 of the government coalition including the five MPs of MDA. While the Parliament has 85 seats, the only MP that is supporting the government without joining the opposition is the MP for Hulhu-Henveiru constituency, the Deputy Speaker, Moosa Manik.
The main opposition party, MDP currently have 21 seats and Jumhooree Party (JP) have seven and one MP of the Adhaalath Party making up the opposition coalition with 29 seats at the parliament. And the 16 MPs that have not allied with any political parties are currently expressing against the government.
