People’s Majlis sittings have been suspended indefinitely.
An official from the People’s Majlis secretariat reported to “Sun” that the sitting scheduled for coming Tuesday has been cancelled, and that Speaker Abdulla Maseeh Mohamed informed the secretariat that the date for Majlis sittings to resume will be announced later.
The suspension comes after a petition for no-confidence motion against Maseeh was submitted with the vote of 45 parliamentarians – including 10 ruling Progressive Party of Maldives (PPM) parliamentarians aligned with President Abdulla Yameen Abdul Gayoom - this Monday.
Isdhoo MP Ahmed Rasheed – one of the PPM parliamentarians – has since denied signing the petition.
The opposition has released a photo showing MP Ahmed Rasheed seemingly signing the petition in front of Dhiggaru MP Ahmed Faris Maumoon. When asked about the picture, MP
Ahmed Rasheed responded that a picture cannot be believed during these “scientifically advanced” times.
