MDP will not participate in any election in which Nasheed cannot contest

Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP) has decided not to participate in any election in which former President and MDP presidential candidate Mohamed Nasheed cannot contest.

This decision was made at a meeting of MDP National Council, following the passing of a resolution submitted by Henveiru South MP Hamid Abdul Gafoor.

The resolution was passed unanimously and without debate, by the 66 members present at the meeting.

While presenting the resolution, Hamid Abdul Gafoor said that criminal charges are being filed against Nasheed to prevent him from contesting in the presidential election. He also accused that Nasheed was removed from office as a result of MDP’s ‘Journey to Justice’ campaign.

An additional resolution on the criminal charges against Nasheed was also presented to the Council by Madaveli MP Nazim at last night’s meeting.
