Human Rights Commission of Maldives (HRCM) has said that investigations into the allegations of attempts to assassinate former President Mohamed Nasheed on 7 February 2012 have been completed.
HRCM member Ahmed Abdul Kareem said that this report does not include details of the events which led to the transfer of power.
“We investigated whether the incidents of 7 February violated Nasheed’s human rights, and whether he was exposed to violence. The allegations that there were attempts to assassinate him were also included in this investigation,” Ahmed Abdul Kareem said.
He did not provide any details of the report, citing that even though it had been completed, it will only be finalized and sent to the relevant authorities next week.
When asked about the contents of the report since it does not include details of the transfer of power, Ahmed Abdul Kareem said that it includes details of whether there were violations of human rights during the protests at Artificial Beach on the night of 6 February.
It also includes information on the unrest near MNBC, as well as the raid of Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP) Haruge on 7 February.
When asked if HRCM had provided any information on the transfer of power to the Commission of National Inquiry (CNI), he said that CNI had not requested for any information.
Referring to allegations that Nasheed was pepper sprayed in the eyes during MDP’s Direct Action protests, Ahmed Abdul Kareem said that the issue is under investigation even though it had not been filed to HRCM as a complaint.
“The use of pepper spray to break up protests in itself, is not a problem. Nonetheless allegations that Nasheed was sprayed in the eyes are currently being investigated by HRCM,” he said.
