The new 8.9 megawatt generator brought by State Electric Company (Stelco) to solve the issue of blackouts in Male’ City has been made operational.
The new generator was made operational in a function held at Stelco this Sunday by Minister of Environment, Toriq Ibrahim.
Stelco reports that its 26 generators currently produce a total of 64 megawatts of electricity, and that the new addition will increase the capacity to 72 megawatts.
Speaking to press, Minister Toriq said the high-rises in Male’ City was pushing up electricity consumption by 11 percent per year.
He said the government was doing a lot of work to fulfill its promise to guarantee 24/7 electricity across the country, and that the new generator was part of the effort.
Stelco reports Male’ City currently consumes 55 megawatts of electricity during peak hours.
The new generator was brought to Maldives through non-reimbursable aid from Asia Development Bank (ADB) as a Preparing Outer Island for Sustainable Energy Development (POISED) project.
