Shifaq Mufeed (Histo) – who resigned from Human Rights Commission of Maldives (HRCM) last week– has been appointed State Minister at Ministry of Home Affairs.
The appointment has been confirmed by Spokesperson at President’s Office, Ibrahim Muaz Ali.
Shifaq resigned from HRCM last Thursday, May 11. But he has not disclosed the reason for his resignation.
The former Central Fuvahmulah representative at People’s Majlis had been voicing disapproval over some of the decisions of HRCM to the media before he handed in his resignation. It is unclear at this point whether his resignation is in direct connection with his disapproval.
Shifaq was appointed to HRCM in August, 2015. He had been a general member of the Progressive Party of Maldives (PPM) before the appointment.
Fuvahmulah native, Shifaq ventured into the political field as a member of Adhaalath Party. He joined Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP) and won the Central Fuvahmulah seat at People’s Majlis in 2009. He joined PPM – which had been the main opposition party at the time – in 2012, and then joined Jumhoory Party (JP) in 2013.
