The President’s Office has said that MVR50,000 is provided monthly as residence expenses alone, to former President Mohamed Nasheed.
An official of President’s Office said today that as required by the law on privileges and protection of former Presidents, the State has so far spent MVR1.5 million on former President Nasheed.
Financial statements published by the President’s Office today reveal that MVR134,166.67 had been provided to Nasheed as office operations expenses, for the 23 remaining days of February 2012 from the day he resigned.
In addition, for the same period, MVR38,333.33 had been provided as financial privileges and MVR38,333.33 had been provided as living expenses.
For March, April, May, June and July 2012, MVR175,000 had been provided as office operations expenses.
For the same period, MVR50,000 had been provided as monthly financial privileges, and MVR50,000 has been provided as monthly residence expenses.
So far, a total of MVR288,333.33 has been spent as residence expenses, and a total of MVR1,009,166.69 has been spent as office operations expenses of former President Nasheed.
However no medical expenses have been made from the State budget for former President Nasheed.
Article 3(a) of the law on privileges to former Presidents states that former Presidents who have served one term of presidency are entitled to a monthly financial privilege of MVR50,000, while former Presidents who have served more than one term are entitled to a monthly sum of MVR75,000.
