Prosecutor General’s Office has withdrawn its request at High Court that the ruling PPM’s candidate for the North-Machangolhi seat Ghanim Abdul Gafoor be taken into police custody.
Ghanim is a suspect in a street fight which took place in Alimas Carnival area of Male’ City in March, 2017.
PG’s Office requested at High Court that he be taken back into police custody after Criminal Court ordered his release.
An official from PG’s Office who spoke to “Sun” said the request was withdrawn after Maldives Police Service informed the office that it no longer required that Ghanim be taken back into custody.
The official said it had been MPS which had made the initial request that Ghanim be taken back into custody.
Ghanim was also prosecuted but later exonerated in the stabbing of a military officer in 2013.
He is PPM's candidate for the North-Machangolhi seat of Male' City Council for Local Council Election 2017 - scheduled to be held on May 6.
