No additional jobs or employees, says the Ministry of Finance

The Ministry of Finance has asked all government agencies not to create any additional jobs and not to hire any additional employees for vacant posts, in an effort to reduce government expenditure.

A Circular from the Ministry, signed by Minister Ahmed Inaz and released on Thursday, said that expenses incurred in paying wages to government employees constituted the biggest component in the government expenditure, and that no additional jobs should be created during the year. The Circular also stated that a new employee could be hired for a job that becomes vacant only with the approval of the Ministry.

The Ministry of Finance says that it has been trying to control government expenditure after considering the government’s revenue and expenses so far this year. As such, the Ministry has also required all agencies to get prior permission from the Ministry for any travels abroad and all repair and maintenance costs.

“All the jobs of employees dismissed under the redundancy program have also been abolished, and this has to some extent helped to control government expenditure”, said the Ministry.

In accordance with a staff-level agreement between the government and the International Monetary Fund, the government would not increase wage rates either, said the Circular from the Ministry.

While government agencies and corporations have, under the claimed policy of reducing government expenditure, dismissed a large number of employees, many political posts entitled to huge salaries, and a number of new government offices have been created.
