Nasheed prepared to face up to allegations

Former President Mohamed Nasheed has said that he is prepared to face up to the allegations made against him by the Prosecutor General’s (PG) Office, in relation to the arrest of Chief Judge of Criminal Court Abdullah Mohamed (Judge Abdullah).

Speaking at a Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP) rally at Usfasgandu last night, Nasheed said that he is prepared to be present in court anytime, but added that the trial must be fair.

He said that some politicians in Maldives believe that by removing him from society, they can erase MDP’s ideologies from Maldives – however this cannot be achieved.

“They can injure me, punish me, put in a small prison cell, banish me, injure me, remove me from society – but they can no longer erase the ideologies of MDP from the Maldives,” Nasheed said.

In addition to the allegations against Nasheed by PG Office, Supreme Court has also indicated that Judge Abdullah was arrested in violation of the law.

However Nasheed stressed last night that he had done nothing unlawful while he was president.

Referring to the current protests in Male’ by MDP, Nasheed said that the protests will continue until the government announces an early election.
