EC: Voters’ lists fully compliant with Supreme Court guideline

Voters’ lists for upcoming local council elections was prepared in full compliance with the Supreme Court guideline, says Elections Commission.

No. 5 of the guideline issued by Supreme Court declaring results of presidential election in 2013 void states that the EC and candidates or representatives of the candidates need to verify the final voters’ lists.

EC has now prepared the voters list for the local council elections and invited political parties to sign off on it.

However, Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP) – the country’s main opposition party – has expressed reluctance in signing off on the voters’ lists.

One of the biggest concerns, according to MDP, is that the lists did not include the national identity card numbers of voters.

EC member Ahmed Akram in a press briefing this Tuesday denied the allegation.

According to Akram, the voters’ lists sent to political parties included the full name, address, identity card numbers as well as photos of all the voters.

He showed some of the voters list to the press.

“Voters’ list was prepared in adherence to Supreme Court guideline. The list is fully compliant with the guideline,” said Akram.

Despite MDP’s concerns, Akram said that even MDP was signing off on voters’ lists of some of the candidates.

He said that all political parties were signing off on the voters’ lists.

“I don’t know what their intention is. I’m saying our lists even have the identity card numbers.

The list is fully compliant with Supreme Court guideline and used in polling stations,” said Akram.

EC called out for a cease in dissemination of false allegations against the commission.
