Former President Nasheed and former Defence Minister Thalhath prosecuted

Prosecutor General’s (PG) Office has forwarded the case against Former President Mohamed Nasheed and former Defence Minister Thalhath Ibrahim, accusing them of illegally detaining Chief Judge of Criminal Court Abdullah Mohamed (Judge Abdullah), for prosecution.

PG office said that the case was filed today to Hulhumale’ Court.

A statement released by the PG office says that former Chief of Defence Force Moosa Ali Jaleel, Brigadier General Ibrahim Mohamed Didi and Colonel Mohamed Ziyad will also be prosecuted for this crime.

They are being accused of violating article 81 of the Penal code, which states that it is an offence for any public servant to use authority to detain an innocent person.

Judge Abdullah was arrested on 16 January 2012 while he was at home, by officers of Maldives National Defence Force (MNDF). Both the government and Police ignored calls to produce the Judge in Court.

Judge Abdullah was released after Nasheed’s resignation as President.

Human Rights Commission of Maldives (HRCM) had completed its investigation of Judge Abdullah’s arrest and forwarded its report to PG Office.
