The legal team of the Leader of the Jumhooree Party, Qasim Ibrahim, has said that the appeal on the court order to arrest the JP Leader was rejected by the Criminal Court.
A statement issued by Qasim’s legal team today said that the court order to arrest Qasim was outside the law and the appeal against the order was filed according to the regulations of the Supreme Court.
But the Criminal Court counter refused to accept the documents claiming that the appeal cannot be made according to the statement issued by Qasim’s legal team.
The statement said that court order for the arrest of the JP Leader was not requested by the Prosecutor General but upon a request from the Maldives Police Service.
And so Qasim was arrested in violation of Article 13-A of the Immunity Law that states the arrest and release regulation of MPs.
In their statement, Qasim’s legal team said that the refusal to accept the appeal is a clear obstruction of the efforts to get justice for Qasim and he is concerned about it.
The legal team said that a request has been made at the Prosecutor General to step in on behalf of Qasim since the arrest was made illegally.
Qasim’s legal team said that the Criminal Court has accepted the appeal documents for his six-day remand which was filed today.
