Former President Maumoon Abdul Gayoom has said that he was persecuted and mistreated by former President Mohamed Nasheed’s government.

Gayoom made this statement while addressing the people of Hulhumeedhoo yesterday, as part of his visit to Addu City to expand the activities of Progressive Party of Maldives (PPM).

Gayoom said that he had been unable to visit Hulhumeedhoo for a long time due to the obstructions imposed by the former government.

“The former government’s policies against me were extremely hostile. Members of Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP) attempted to attack me while I was at home in Male’ by throwing stones at my house. It was a challenge for me to live in my own house, in my own country,” Gayoom said.

Gayoom said that criminal activities such as assault and arson attacks are conducted through the support of certain groups of people, who have international backing and provide financial incentives to induce crime.

Gayoom stressed that PPM would work for the development and peace of the country.

“We will never throw stones at people whose views are different from ours. We won’t attack people’s homes or set fire to people’s property. This is our policy, our philosophy,” Gayoom said.

Gayoom participated in a pre-Ramadan feast in Feydhoo organized by the PPM office in Feydhoo, and met with PPM members in Feydhoo.
