Appeal hearing on Mohamed Shaifan’s death sentence scheduled for this Thursday has been cancelled by Supreme Court.
Supreme Court had scheduled an appeal hearing for Shaifan on November 22, 2016. But the hearing was later cancelled at the request of Shaifan’s attorney who was out of the country at the time.
Criminal Court had Shaifan cleared of premeditated murder of Ali Shifan from M. Fairy Corner in Male’ City when High Court overturned the conviction on May 10, 2016 and sentenced Shaifan to death for the murder.
Charges were unproven against the two other suspects prosecuted in the murder case – Abdulla Thilmeez from M. Dhinmana in Male’ City and Mohamed Mishaan Abdul Haadhee from M. Silvernest in Male’ City. And High Court ruled in support of the Criminal Court verdict during appeal.
However, Shaifan was found guilty of the murder beyond any reasonable doubt.
Shifan died due to stab injuries sustained after being attacked by a group of men in four motorcycles as stood in front of West Park Restaurant at approximately 4:40 pm on April 1, 2012.
