Ethics committee of the ruling Progressive Party of Maldives (PPM) had made the decision to oust Thulusdhoo MP Mohamed Waheed Ibrahim (Lawyer Wadde) from the party.
After the complaint against Wadde was lodged with the ethics committee, he was instructed via writing to send two party members to the PPM office to speak on his behalf.
PPM’s Secretary-General, Nilandhoo MP Dr. Abdulla Khaleel reports Wadde failed to honor the summons and the decision was therefore made in absentia.
“It was decided through the unanimous vote of five members of the ethics committee last night to remove Waheed from the party,” said Khaleel.
Khaleel said a large volume of complaints had been filed against Wadde, including complaints over his outright criticism of President Abdulla Yameen Abdul Gayoom’s administration even though he was a member of the ruling party.
“Waheed has repeatedly voted in violation of parliamentary group’s whipline. He has repeatedly worked against the party’s activities,” said Khaleel.
Wadde is still a member of PPM pending the outcome of the appeal process he is entitled to.
