Home Ministry and MMC condemn MDP

Ministry of Home Affairs and Maldives Media Council (MMC) have condemned the violence being inflicted on the public, journalists, Policemen, MNDF personnel and state property by protesters of Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP).

Ministry of Home Affairs, through a statement issued today, strongly condemned the injuries inflicted on Policemen and MNDF personnel over the past 48 hours at the protests on the streets of Malé organised by MDP.

The Ministry also condemned the arson attacks last night on N. Holhudhoo Police office, as well as on the car of Human Rights Minister Dhiyana Saeed.

Home Ministry called on the relevant authorities to conduct investigations and produce those responsible for the crimes in court.

MMC highlighted in their statement that journalists are being physically and psychologically harmed in the series of protests. They called on the state and politicians to refrain from restricting media freedom, and also called for the individual investigation of every incident in which violence was imposed on journalists.

Jumhooree Party (JP) has also condemned the arson attacks on the Police office in N. Holhudhoo and on Dhiyana Saeed’s car, as well as the damage being caused to state and private property during the series of protests.

JP also urged protesters to keep their actions within the limits of the law.

PPM said in their statement that in addition to all the criminal activities, the party also condemns the removal of the Police barricades by Malé City Council.
