Barge carrying boulders runs aground Funaddoo reef

A barge carrying a shipment of boulders by Maldives Transport and Contracting Company (MTCC) to Th. Thimarafushi has run aground Funaddoo reef.

Deputy Director of Thimarafushi Council, Ahmed Ali reported to “Sun” that the barge ran aground Funaddoo reef last Tuesday evening.

He said the council and locals from the island were working on hauling the barge off the reef.

“We started working on hauling the barge off the reef with the assistance of the people of this island as soon as we received news it ran aground the reef. The ship which was towing the barge along has now been hauled off,” said Ahmed Ali.

The shipment of boulders on board the barge is for the construction of a seawall around the land reclaimed for Thimarafushi airport.
