Tidal waves cause flooding in northern atolls

Tidal waves have resulted in severe flooding in a number of islands located in the north of the country.

Worst-hit were H. Dh. Kulhudhuffushi, Sh. Funadhoo and Sh. Feevah where tidal waves overnight caused damage to households in the islands, in addition to severe damage to farmland in Feevah.

Director of Maldives Meteorological Service, Ahmed Rasheed reports that the office forecasted high probability of flooding in the northern and central atolls of the country during high tide until Thursday.

The tide will be highest at noon and midnight.

Weather forecast:

Isolated showers and a few thunderstorms are expected in central and northern atolls, while the weather in southern atolls is expected to be fine in general.

Surface winds will vary between northeast to easterly at 13 – 23 miles per hour in central atolls, and 7 – 17 miles per hour elsewhere.

Seas are expected to be rough in the central and moderate elsewhere.
