Foreign Minister congratulates the new US Foreign Secretary

Maldivian Foreign Minister, Dr. Mohamed Asim has sent a letter congratulating the newly appointed Secretary of State of the United States of America, Rex Tillerson.

In his letter, the Minister congratulated Secretary Tillerson and highlighted on the close bonds of friendship and trust between the two countries, which are based on mutual understanding and respect. Minister Dr. Asim also expressed hope to work closely with Secretary Tillerson to further strengthen the existing ties of friendship and cooperation between the two nations.

Tillerson was sworn in as the Secretary of State on 1 February 2017.

The Maldives and the United States have enjoyed close bilateral relations for over five decades, with cooperation in many areas, including in tourism, trade, and defence cooperation. In 2016, the Maldives had over 30,000 tourist arrivals from the United States.
