President Abdulla Yameen Abdul Gayoom has said that the Maldives cannot abide by every single decision made by the United Nations Working Group on Arbitrary Detention (UN WGAD).
Speaking at a ceremony held today to commemorate a number of Council Presidents joining PPM, President Yameen said that we cannot “applaud’ every decision made by the WGAD.
The President said that the UN Charter allows freedom of religion but the Maldives cannot allow this as it is a 100 Muslim country. And from a human right point of view, WGAD may rule that the Maldivian government is not allowing the freedom of faith.
President Yameen said that no one has the right to influence the decisions made by the Maldivian courts and every citizen must obey the rulings of the courts.
The responsibility for courts decisions are to be taken by the courts themselves according to the President and there are three phases of appeal.
