Dangerous incidents began taking place due to lack of proper education: Gayoom

Former President Maumoon Abdul Gayoom has said that the dangerous incidents and serious problems in Maldives currently, are results of failure to provide proper education to children.

Speaking at the second annual general meeting of the Maumoon Foundation, Gayoom said that the Foundation’s purpose of providing opportunities for higher education is to produce educated youth whose contributions will benefit the nation long-term.

He noted that Maldives owes its progress and achievements to those individuals who had obtained higher education.

“So, it is our individual responsibility to become someone who has obtained such education. Education should teach us proper ways of doing things. This is encouraged in our religion as well. The most important trait of a society where people are educated is that people respect one another. They should wish each other well, care for one another, and prioritise the nation’s interest over one’s own,” Gayoom said.

He stressed that the Foundation’s aim is to provide opportunities to youth for higher education and encourage Islamic policies and discipline in the society.
