Transparency: Corruption subsided in Maldives

The Corruption Perception Index 2016 (CPI 2016) by Transparency International publicized today has shown that corruption in the Maldives have gone down in the past five years.

The last time the Maldives was on the CPI was in 2011 at 134th with a score of 25. It was even lower than Ethiopia that year.

After four years, the Maldives is on the list again at 95th with a score of 36 points.

The country shares the position with five more countries; Sri Lanka, Argentina, Benin, El Salvador and Kosovo. Corruption in a major issue in Argentina while corruption in Benin and Kosovo are alarmingly high. And El Salvador is the most dangerous country in the world outside of a war zone.

CPI 2016 shows the most competitive countries in Asia, China and India at 79th with 40 points.

Corruption is the lowest in Denmark and New Zealand with a score of 90 according to the CPI. Somalia and South Sudan are at the opposite of the spectrum as the most corrupted countries in the world.

SAARC and Asia Pacific Region:

In regards to the lowest corruption in South Asia, the lowest is in Bhutan according to the CPI with a score of 65 followed by India with 40. While the Maldives and Sri Lanka share the third place in the region, the fourth place Pakistan with 32 points followed by Nepal with 29 points. The bottom two are Bangladesh with 26 points and Afghanistan with 15.

In the Asia Pacific, the corruption was reported to have elevated in Cambodia and Thailand. India, China and Australia area on the Corruption Watch-list in the region.

Chairperson of Transparency International, José Ugaz said that basic needs of the people are not being fulfilled in a number of countries and are forced to end their day with starvation due to corruption of the powerful people.
