PPM: Government coalition will gain supermajority in Council Election

Progressive Party of Maldives (PPM) has commented it expected the government coalition to gain supermajority in the upcoming Local Council Election.

The comment was made by Secretary-General of PPM, Nilandhoo MP Dr. Abdulla Khaleel during a press conference held this Wednesday, January 25.

Khaleel said PPM expected the government coalition; PPM, Maldives Development Alliance (MDA) and Dhivehi Rayyithuge Party (DRP) to gain supermajority in the election.

“We, god willing, can say this with surety. The PPM, MDA and DRP coalition will take the supermajority,” said Khaleel.

He said PPM started submitting its application forms to Elections Commission on Wednesday, January 24, and that the campaigning was being carried out at full-swing.

PPM’s primary is scheduled for Friday, January 27.

The party has announced it will not be holding primaries for 212 constituencies.

Speaking during the press conference - former Managing Director of Fenaka Corporation, Mohamed Nimal – who has been appointed as Manager of PPM’s campaign for Local Council Election, said that he wished to rise up to the responsibilities entrusted to him.

“Though we haven’t yet set a focus or theme for the campaign, we have decided that we will listen to the people, do our service to the people, and bring prosperity to the people. We will, god willing, plan our campaign based on these three things,” said Nimal.

Local Council Election is scheduled to be held on April 8.

Maldivian Democratic Party has announced it will be participating in the election while Adhaalath Party has announced it will be boycotting the election due to doubts over its fairness and transparency.
