Ibrahim Abdul Rahman from R. Dhuvaafaru – suspected of being behind the contract killing of Hussein Razeen (Rabarey) from Male’ City in Colombo, Sri Lanka – has been provided a second opportunity to hire legal representation.
Rabarey – a former gangster turned businessman – was discovered murdered in a paddy field on November 5, 2015.
Ibrahim has been charged with hiding a murder, and being an accessory to murder carried out using a sharp weapon.
The two charges against Ibrahim were read during the hearing held on January 11.
Reading the charges, State prosecutor said Ibrahim was charged with hiding a murder because he was fully aware of Rabarey’s murder on November 5, 2015 but hid the crime.
The second charge against him is for traveling to Sri Lanka in October, 2015, meeting Bilal Mohamed Ahmed, paying him money to murder Rabarey, planning Rabarey’s murder and making an additional transfer to Bilal’s bank account after Bilal sent him the picture confirming Rabarey had been murdered.
He was given 15 days to hire a lawyer.
During the hearing held this Tuesday, January 24, Ibrahim said he was unable to hire a lawyer due to his financial situation.
The judge ordered Ibrahim to hire a public defender if he was unable to hire one on his own. And granted Ibrahim 10 more days during which to hire legal representation.
Ibrahim has been charged under the law on anti-menace and possession of lethal weapons and sharp objects. And stands to be sentenced to imprisonment for 15 to 25 years.
State prosecutor, Adam Mohamed requested that Ibrahim be transferred to police custody in a place mandated by Ministry of Home Affairs given the severity of the charges against him.
The request was denied by the judge who said Ibrahim will be kept under house arrest pending outcome of his trial.
