Ambassador meets USTC students over registration issue

Maldivian ambassador to Bangladesh, Aishath Shan Shakir has met with Maldivian medical students at University of Science and Technology of Chittagong (USTC) protesting the lack of registration with Bangladesh Medical and Dental Council.

The meeting between the newly appointed ambassador and the 28 Maldivian medical students facing the issue took place on Monday, January 23.

Shan briefed the students regarding Maldivian government’s efforts to resolve the issue, and provided assurance the government will continue with the efforts.

Maldivian government has brought the plight of the students to the attention of Bangladeshi authorities via Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Bangladesh.

Maldivian embassy in Bangladesh has filed an official complaint over the issue with Ministry of Health of Bangladesh and BMDC – requesting quick resolution of the issue.

Officials from Maldivian embassy have also met with the Vice Chancellor of USTC.

The issue arose when BMDC refused to register the medical students after USTC went over its limit in enrolling students to the university. This has left hundreds of medical students from Maldives, India and Bhutan without registration – rendering their education useless and depriving them of permission to practice medicine.

Students have been holding demonstrations over the issue at the university campus.

Both Maldivian and Indian government have reached out to Bangladesh over the issue.
