Ministry of Tourism resorts that 2016 saw the highest number of resort openings in Maldives in the span of one year.
Ministry of Tourism granted permission to arrange accommodation for tourists in 124 new places in 2016.
Statistics show 37,218 beds in 667 places were registered to accommodate tourists by end of December, 2016.
It also shows that 11 new resorts were open in Maldives – the highest number of resort openings in Maldives in one year.
The 11 resorts opened in 2016 are:
1. Soneva Jani (N. Medhufaru)
2. Furaveri Island Resort (R. Furaveri)
3. Finolhu (B. Kanifushi)
4. Dhigufaru Island Resort (B. Dhigufaruvinagandu)
5. Four Seasons Private Island Maldives at Voavah (B. Voavah)
6. Milaidhoo Island Maldives (B. Milaidhoo)
7. Malahini Kuda Bandos (K. Kuda Bandos)
8. Ozen By Atmosphere at Maadhoo Island (K. Maadhoo)
9. Huravalhi Maldives Resort (Lh. Huravalhi)
10. Coccoon Maldives (Lh. Ookolhufinolhu)
11. St. Regis Maldives Vohmuli (Dh. Vohmuli)
Ministry of Tourism reported it also provided permission to operate 11 tourist vessels, 101 guesthouses and one tourist hotel in 2016.
Approximately 1.3 million tourists visited Maldives in 2016 – 4.2 percent increase compared to tourist arrivals in 2015.
However, it falls about 100,000 tourists short of the target.
