President Abdulla Yameen Abdul Gayoom has officially inaugurated the clean drinking water production system built by government in M. Dhiggaru.
President Yameen was joined in the inauguration ceremony this Monday morning by Minister of Environment, Toriq Ibrahim and Minister of Housing and Infrastructure, Dr. Mohamed Muizzu.
The water production system in Dhiggaru was built at the expense of MVR 25.8 million from the State budget as part of President Yameen’s administration’s initiative to ensure clean drinking water to all.
The project was contracted to Male’ Water and Sewerage Company (MWSC) in August, 2013, and the construction began in March, 2014.
The water production system has two 20-ton desalination plants – with the capacity to produce 40 cubic meters of water per day, and a 200-ton storage. It also includes a 4.6 kilometer network with 202 water meters in households and other buildings on the island.
In addition to the water production plants, the island also has a water storage with the capacity to store 500-tons of water with a filter system – to promote use of natural resources.
The water production system in Dhiggaru will be managed by Fenaka Corporation.
Meanwhile, Minister of Environment, Toriq Ibrahim inaugurated construction of the island’s sewerage system this Monday.
The MVR 54 million project to build a water production system and sewerage system in Dhiggaru was launched during campaign for parliamentary election, on March 16, 2014, by a delegation of government officials.
Work on the sewerage system had been at a standstill and only the water production system has been completed.
Dhiggaru is represented by MP Faris Maumoon – son of leader of Progressive Party of Maldives (PPM), former Maldivian President Maumoon Abdul Gayoom.
