Five State employees have been charged with negligence over the death of lifelong victim of abuse – Mohamed Ibthihaal, 3, from V. Rakeedhoo.
The accused Aminath Shiyaza (Vaavu Fulidhoo) and Ahmed Shujad (Gaafu Dhaalu Fiyori) were two employees at the Ministry of Family and Gender at the time of the incident while Moaned Rasheed (Gaafu Alifu Dhevvadhoo) and Mohamed Shakeeb (Faafu Feeali) are current employees of the Ministry.
The fifth accused in the case is the Acting Commander of the Vaavu Atoll Police Station at the time of the incdent, Lisan Abubakuru (Baa Eydhafushi).
Shiyaz, Shujad and Rasheed were charged with under Article 88-D of the Penal Code in refernce to the law against domestic abuse and the protection of the rights of children.
Ibthihaal was found dead in his home with signs of physical injuries on January 28, 2015. The toddler's mother - Afiya Mohamed - another victim of abuse - stands trial for his murder. She confessed to court that she kicked and strangled Ibthihaal on the day of his death.
Grandfather of the toddler, Ismail Rauf (Meemu Dhiggaru) was charged with sexual abuse of Ibthihaal.
