Islamic television channel “Munnaaru” launched

The Islamic television channel “Munnaaru” by Public Service Media (PSM) and Ministry of Islamic Affairs to deliver religious information and raise religious awareness has been launched by President Abdulla Yameen Abdul Gayoom.

The television channel was launched by President Yameen in a special function held at President’s Office this Thursday morning.

PSM and Ministry of Islamic Affairs signed the agreement to pool its resources and launch “Munnaaru” in November.

Via the new television channel, community prayers in mosques and religious sermons will be delivered in real time.

Speaking during the launching, Minister of Islamic Affairs, Dr. Ahmed Ziyad Bagir stressed on the importance of such a television channel to deliver the pure Islamic faith to the younger generations.

“The geographic makeup of Maldives is such that it’s difficult for Islamic scholars to travel to travel to some islands during certain weather. But with the birth of this channel, Islamic scholars will be able to deliver their information to the Maldivian people, no matter the weather condition,” said Minister Ziyad.

He appealed to Islamic scholars to make the best use of “Munnaaru” to deliver accurate and useful information to the people.

PSM reported that the signal for “Munnaaru” will be available to regions which Television Maldives (TVM) is available to.

PSM also reported it was working on making “Munnaaru” a 24/7 channel.

“Munnaaru” follows the Islamic radio channel “Dheenuge Adu” which was launched by PSM earlier this year.
