Water Solutions Private Limited has been hired for engineering design of Thilafushi waste management facility and feasibility study of the Zone III waste management system.
The agreements for the two projects were signed in a function held at Ministry of Environment and Energy this Tuesday, by Deputy Minister of Environment and Energy, Ali Amir and Director of Water Solutions, Hassan Shah.
The projects, worth MVR 5.19 million are part of the “Saafu Rajje” campaign.
Water Solutions has been contracted to complete the projects within eight months.
The first project includes designing and engineering design of the waste management system in Zone III – A. A. Atoll, A. Dh. Atoll, K. Atoll and V. Atoll.
The second includes Environmental Impact Assessment of 10 hectors of land reclamation needed for the Thilafushi waste management facility
“So the land reclamation in Thilafushi can be contracted to a party. This land will be for waste management,” said Deputy Minister Amir.
It also includes engineering design of the incinerator which will be installed in Thilafushi, its size, its cost, and the technology which will be used.
In addition to this, Water Solutions will be doing an engineering study of waste transfer between Male’, Hulhumale’ and Vilimale’; and preparing contract documents.
“By the end of the eight months, we will have engineering designs and the contract documents needed for it in our hands,” said Amir.
Amir said that Ministry of Environment and Energy was discussing with Asian Development Bank to stop burning the waste out in the open. He said it will be put to a complete stop by end of 2016, or start of 2017.
He said that the large incinerator which will be installed in Thilafushi prevent any negative environmental impact. And that it will have the capacity to incinerate 400 to 500 tons of waste per day.
