Minister: Fully committed to achieving development goals

Minister of Environment and Energy, Toriq Ibrahim has pledged the full commitment of the Maldivian government to achieving sustainable development goals.

Minister Toriq made the pledge this Tuesday, during introductory seminar of the technical committee for sustainable development held at Champa Central Hotel.

During his speech as chief guest of the seminar, Minister Toriq said Maldives had made great progress achieving the sustainable development goals.

He said that Maldives was exemplary in its progress towards achieving the millennial development goals, and that Maldivian government was committed to working harder in order to achieve the sustainable development goals.

“As we talk of sustainable development, we also need to talk about the achievements made in this front. The millennial goals have been achieved by 2015. Maldives has been exemplary in achieving the millennial goals from South Asian region. We are fully committed to doing whatever we can to achieve the sustainable development goals as well,” said Toriq.

Minister Toriq said it was the mission of the Maldivian government to make the most progress in achieving the sustainable development goals in the South Asian region.

Ministry of Environment and Energy reported the purpose of the introductory seminar held this Tuesday was to inform the participants on what the sustainable development goals are, and the work being done to achieve the goals.

The one-day introductory seminar is being attended by technical staff from State agencies as well as United Nations agencies.

Speaking during the seminar, Senior Policy Executive of Ministry of Environment and Energy, Dr. Abdulla Naseer said the technical committee was compiled in order to assess what can be done by Maldives to achieve the sustainable development goals, how to implement the strategies, and compile policies technically assess and oversee the progress.

The sustainable development goals were passed during United Nations General Assembly in September, 2015. It includes 17 goals and 169 targets.

The goals include eliminating poverty by 2030, establishing justice and equality, and taking preventive measures against detrimental effects of environmental changes.
