President Abdulla Yameen Abdul Gayoom has announced that construction of a sewerage system, and banking services will begin in G. A. Gemanafushi in 2017.
Speaking during function held at Gemanafushi on Tuesday night to celebrate Fishermen’s Day, President Yameen said that the island was currently most in need of a sanitary system. And pledged that construction of a sewerage system would begin in Gemanafushi in the coming 2017.
He also concurred with Gemanafushi MP Jameel Usman’s comments during the function regarding the importance of banking services in the island, and pledged to launch some form of service by Bank of Maldives (BML) in Gemanafushi in 2017.
“Some form of BML service… Since it’s a fishing island, undoubtedly there will be wealth. So the people will need it. The good news is, BML’s CEO just informed be through Dr. Shainee to assure the people of Gemanafushi. That during the coming year, during 2017, some form of
BML presence will be established in Gemanafushi for the convenience of the people,” said President Yameen.
During his speech, President Yameen talked about the challenges faced by Maldivian fish products in the international market, and announced that government’s strategy was to increase volume of export of processed fish products than focusing on export of raw fish.
He announced that construction of up to four canneries in Maldives, financed by Saudi Fund, would begin in 2017.
