Mohamed Afzal (Apo) - appointed to Media Council from media stations – has handed in his resignation.
Apo was appointed to Media Council in February, 2016.
Secretary-General of Media Council has confirmed Apo handed over his letter of resignation on December 8.
Apo spoke to “Sun” this Monday and said he handed over his resignation as he was no longer active in the media field.
He had been working for “Avas” when he was appointed to the Media Council.
Media Council regulation dictates that members needed to perform their duties until they receive confirmation their resignation has been accepted. It also states that resignations will be assumed to have been accepted if the member does not get a reply within 15 days after he/she hands over the letter of resignation.
Secretary-General of Media Council reported that end of membership terms meant council meetings cannot be held over lack of quorum. And that a decision had not yet been made over Apo’s letter of resignation.
“But we have informed Ministry of Home Affairs regarding the letter of resignation,” said the Secretary-General.
Apo and an independently appointed member have two years more until their term ends, while other council members are past their terms in office.
Voting for a new term began at 4:30 pm, this Monday.
