Human Rights Commission of Maldives (HRCM) has announced that it has looked into 964 cases so far this year.
In a statement released by HRCM on occasion of Human Rights Day being marked this Saturday, members of the commission called out for everyone to do what they can to “stand up for someone’s rights” – which is the theme for Human Rights Day 2016.
HRCM warned in its statement that domestic violence, sexual violence, exploitation of rights of foreign workers, lack of services for people with disabilities was increasing at an alarming rate in Maldives.
“These are things we need to worry over, take a stand on, and work on an individual level to resolve, for the right of another,” said HRCM.
The commission said it had looked into 964 cases related to human rights violations this year.
HRCM said 384 new cases were filed with the commission this year; the most frequent of which are complaints regarding insufficient or unsatisfactory health care services, human rights violations of prisoners, and violation of rights of children.
The commission asked for more support from relevant agencies and community as a whole in order to improve the human rights situation in Maldives.
