Maldives Monetary Authority (MMA) has sold USD 2.8 million to over 5,000 tickets in their third week of selling USD to locals traveling abroad.
MMA started selling Dollars to locals travelling abroad on 20 November 2016. From 4 December, Sunday, to 8 December, Thursday, the MMA has sold USD 2,826,556 to 5,697 tickets.
On their first week of selling USD from 20-24 November, MMA sold USD 2.7 million to 5,635 tickets. The sales of the second week were not confirmed.
While MMA is set to sell USD from 20 November 2016 to 7 January 2017 to locals going abroad, after that period, USD would be sold at the airport.
Currently, MMA is issuing a slip after reviewing the documents of people visiting from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. and a maximum of USD 500 would be sold to those slips starting at 4 p.m. USD are being sold seven days before the departure date of the ticket.
Governor of MMA, Dr. Azeema Adam has previously said that the new procedure would put an end to the long queues to buy USD.
