The Commission of National Inquiry (CNI), created to investigate the transfer of power, has announced that it will not be able to meet the deadline of 31 July to complete its work.
CNI Co-chair retired Singaporean Judge G.P. Selvam said at a press conference at Muleeaage today that the compilation of the report will most likely be complete by the end of August.
Reasons for the delay, according to Mr Selvam, include the delay in resumption of work after reconstitution, and the registration by about 250 people wanting to provide information to CNI.
Mr Selvam believes that collection of information and evidence from the newly-registered people, followed by report compilation, will take time.
He added that any person who wishes to provide information to the CNI should be given the chance to do so.
CNI has said that discussions will be held with the government on extending the deadline.
Following reconstitution of the CNI, President Waheed had announced that the new deadline for the CNI to submit its report to the President, Attorney General, and Prosecutor General, was 31 July.
CNI Chairperson Ismail Shafeeu participated in the meeting today, for the first time since its reconstitution.
