High Court: Sabra’s arrest was illegal, but MPS not accountable

High Court has ruled that the 2013 arrest of former director of police intelligence, Sabra Ibrahim Nooruddin was unlawful, but that it wasn’t something the entire Maldives Police Service should be held accountable for.

High Court issued the verdict after Civil Court ruling that Sabra’s arrest from Ibrahim Nasir International Airport in 2013 was unlawful was appealed by the State.

Civil Court ruled that Sabra being arrested and taken to police headquarters, and then being released shortly afterwards that the police did not have any grounds to arrest her in the first place. The ruling was supported by High Court.

The High Court, however, said that its wasn’t something the entire MPS can be held accountable for, but that Sabra had the legal right to pursue legal action against individual police officers involved if she felt they acted out of line.
