MUO: “Not the least expectation” Local Election will be fair

Maldives United Opposition (MUO) has remarked that it did not have the least expectation the upcoming Local Council Election will be a free and fair election.

Speaking during the MUO press conference held at Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP) headquarters this Saturday evening, Deputy Leader of Adhaalath Party, Ali Zahir said he did have any faith the Local Council Election – scheduled to be held on January 14 – would be a free and fair election.

Ali Zahir said that the opposition, however, believed in voting, and would continue to comply with the principles of democracy.

Meanwhile, Deputy Chairperson of MDP, Ali Niyaz said MUO was waiting on a reply to its official requesting asking for the Carnival to officially launch its council election campaign.

Niyaz said it was therefore preparing to launch the council election campaign from Addu City, next Friday night.

“I think we aren’t getting a place to launch our campaign because PPM isn’t prepared, because they haven’t launched their campaign. We may get a date after that,” said Niyaz.

MUO said it wanted to empower the policy of decentralization, and would be focusing on achieving the object in its campaign.

MDP and AP will be contending the election under MUO.
