Housing units to be built on 7 islands in 2017, 50 in Maduvvari

Construction of housing units in seven Maldivian islands has been budgeted for 2017, with 50 housing units to be built in the heavily congested R. Maduvvari alone.

The construction of the new housing units is allocated under the Public Sector Investment Program (PSIP) section of the projected State budget for 2017, which is currently under evaluation by People’s Majlis.

The new housing units will be built in:

1. Sh. Komandoo, 50 housing units

2. B. Eydhafushi, 100 housing units

3. Lh. Hinnavaru, 100 housing units

4. Dh. Meedhoo, 50 housing units

5. Dh. Kudahuvadhoo, 50 housing units

6. Lh. Naifaru, 100 housing units

7. S. Feydhoo, 100 housing units

MVR 25 million has been allocated for islands where 50 housing units will be constructed, and MVR 50 million for islands where 100 housing units will be constructed.

In addition, MVR 25 million has been allocated to build 50 housing units in R. Maduvvaru – one of the most congested islands in the country.

The issue of overpopulation in Maduvvaru was shared with President Abdulla Yameen Abdul Gayoom during his visit to the island in 2015.

At the time, he noted that the area available for land reclamation was insufficient to provide a solution to overpopulation. He had suggested the people of the island discuss constructing houses up in multiple floors.

The people of Maduvvaru had also shared concern over lack of a proper jetty to dock their boats.

No budget has been allocated for a jetty.
