Hiriga receives National Award of Recognition in Promoting Journalism

Editor-in-Chief of Sun Online, Ahmed Zahir Mohamed (Hiriga) has received the National Award of Recognition in the field of Information and News Dissemination (Promoting Journalism).

Hiriga was presented the award by President Abdulla Yameen Abdul Gayoom during the official National Republic Day function held at Dharubaaruge on Thursday night.

He was one of the 22 parties that received the National Award of Recognition in different areas, this year.

Hiriga, who has nearly three decades of experience in the field of journalism, started his career in Haveeru. He continues to write articles while serving in his current post as Editor-in-Chief of Sun Online.

Hiriga does a number of volunteer work to develop the field of journalism and train young local journalists.

He also lectures schoolchildren on journalism.

He is the founder of Maldives Journalist Association which was started up in 2006, and a member of Media Development Foundation – Maldives.

Hiriga, who has the Silver Pen in service of journalism under his belt, played an instrumental role in Maldives getting accepted as a member of International Federation of Journalists, as the President of Maldives Journalists Association.

He is also the face of Maldivian journalism in multiple international media forums.

He was conferred the Fellow Journalist of Royal Institute of Singapore earlier this year.
