PPM adopts point system to choose candidates for Local Election

President Abdulla Yameen Abdul Gayoom’s faction of Progressive Party of Maldives (PPM) has made the decision to use a point system to choose its candidates for the upcoming Local Council Election.

Speaking to press after the PPM council meeting at Dharubaaruge last Wednesday night, Yameen’s faction’s Secretary-General of PPM, Nilandhoo MP, Dr. Abdulla Khaleel said the council was working on a point system to choose candidates that were sure to win.

“We are working on filtering the candidates through a point system. God willing, this point system will be one which is trusted by our general members, and will fall in line with acceptable standards used in the country,” said Khaleel.

He said the party would hold a primary only if there were enough candidates who score above 75 points.

Khaleel said the point system would reflect multiple criterions including the political capability of each applicant.

Meanwhile, PPM members of its Leader, former Maldivian President Maumoon Abdul Gayoom’s faction are reportedly planning on competing in the election as independent candidates.

Local Council Election will be held on January 14, 2017.
