Family, Bangladeshi police work to rescue “captive” Maldivian woman, child

Family of Maldivian woman and her two-year-old son held “captive” by her Bangladeshi lover in the country are working with the Bangladeshi police to rescue them.

Family reports it had been approximately two weeks since the woman and her child was held captive in Bangladesh since she ran away to the country to be with her lover after he was reportedly deported over a narcotics related case.

The woman’s mother - who is in Bangladesh – informed “Sun” that the family was working with the police from Kishoreganj City to rescue the woman and her child.

She said she was ready to do whatever was necessary to rescue her daughter and grandchild and take them back to Maldives.

She also alleged that Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Maldives was not providing sufficient support.

Ministry of Foreign Affairs reported that the office had been alerted to the situation by Maldivian embassy in Bangladesh on October 18.

It reported that the office was working with the embassy to resolve the issue, and that officials from the office had met with members of the woman’s family to instruct them on how to proceed.

The mother reported the woman wanted to return back to Maldives, but that the family was finding it near impossible to contact her.

“There’s no way to contact her. She doesn’t have her phone. We don’t know if she’s being beaten or not,” said the mother.

Her visa will run out on November 12, but she is adamant not to return back to Maldives without rescuing her daughter and grandchild.
