Family: “Captive” Maldivian woman, child in Kishoreganj, no luck yet

Family of a young Maldivian woman has reported that she and her child was being kept captive in Kishoreganj City, Bangladesh.

The family reports the young woman had run away to Bangladesh to be with her Bangladeshi lover, taking with her, her two-year-old child.

The family said the woman had appealed for their help after suffering from domestic abuse from the hands of her Bangladeshi lover.

The couple had started their romantic relationship while the Bangladeshi man had been working in Maldives. And had followed him to Bangladesh when he was deported over a narcotics-related case.

“The mother and child fell under their captivity. There’s no way to find them. She isn’t given the phone when we call. Says outright he won’t give her the phone,” said member of the family who spoke to “Sun”.

Family reports the woman and child was being kept in Kishoreganj. And that it led to violent confrontations every time they attempted to save them.

The mother of the woman is currently in Dhaka in an attempt to save her daughter and grandchild, but will need to return back to Maldives once her visa runs out in November 12.

The family has reported the issue to both the Sri Lankan police and Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Maldives.

Police reported efforts were being made to save the woman and her child, while Ministry of Foreign Affairs said it will issue information regarding the case later this Sunday.
